Everyone will tell you about the beaches.

They'll tell you to visit Tanjung Aan, learn to surf, hire a scooter and chase waterfalls.

They're all good suggestions.

But the things you'll remember most about Lombok are usually the things nobody thought to mention.

Here are a few of them.

Google Maps Is More of a Suggestion Than a Promise

Google Maps will confidently tell you somewhere is ten minutes away.

Twenty-five minutes later you'll finally arrive.

Not because the roads are bad, but because you'll stop every few kilometres.

There's a viewpoint you didn't expect.

A beach that isn't on your itinerary.

A roadside café that looks too good to drive past.

A herd of cows standing against a backdrop that somehow looks like a desktop wallpaper.

But there's something else worth knowing.

Google Maps doesn't always recommend the most direct or most practical route. Sometimes it'll send you down tiny back roads, through villages or along longer routes when a simpler option exists. Most of the time you'll still get where you're going, but if you're relying on it religiously, it can occasionally lead you on a bit of a wild goose chase.

Treat it like a guide rather than an absolute truth. If something doesn't look quite right, zoom out, check the route options, or ask a local. You'll often discover there's a quicker way to get there.

In Lombok, the journey has a habit of becoming part of the destination anyway.

You Forget What Day of the week It Is

It starts without you noticing.

The Food Scene Is Bigger Than You Expect

Many first-time visitors arrive expecting a handful of local warungs and little else.

Instead they discover artisan bakeries, authentic Italian restaurants, Hungarian comfort food, Chinese eateries, Mexican tacos, craft breweries, specialty coffee and cocktail bars tucked between surf shops and guesthouses.

One evening you might be eating fresh grilled seafood.

The next, handmade pasta.

The evening after that, you'll find yourself lingering over cocktails at Treehouse before deciding to stay for dinner because nobody at the table can agree on leaving just yet.

You Suddenly Start Thinking About Surfing

Even if you've never had the slightest interest before.

Watching surfers paddle out every morning has a strange effect.

By the third day you're wondering if you should book a lesson.

By the fifth you've convinced yourself it can't be that difficult.

By the end of the trip you're already planning another visit so you can improve.

Lombok has a habit of making surfers out of people who never imagined they'd become one.

Bali and Lombok Aren't Competing

People often ask which island is better.

It's the wrong question.

People leave Lombok.

Then they start looking at flights.

They find themselves comparing every beach to the ones they discovered here.

Months later they'll still be talking about that scooter ride, that sunset, or that tiny roadside café they almost drove past.

Not because Lombok shouts the loudest.

Quite the opposite.

It quietly becomes one of those places you never quite stop thinking about.
